Laser Modules

Laser modules are lab style lasers that require a mains power supply . The have extra cooling that means they can be permantly turned on . Heat is the biggest danger to the lifetime of a laser diode and laser modules overcome this issue with TEC colling and heat sinks , laser diodes are also sensitive to current and a laser module will normally be supplied with a specialised tuned to that partucular laser diode power supply to ensure accuracy of power and stability.

Many people have tried to convert the diodes within laser pointers , as a cheap and quick way to test prototype products or research , our small keyring style budget laser pointer is ideal for this however it is very easy to damage the diode and we suggest adding extra cooling heat sinks or TEC units to help keep the diode cool as these units are designed for presentations and are not designed to be used for any more than a minute or two at a time . We have heard of limited success with diodes lasting some weeks but not long term. Also the clean regulated power supply is essential as small voltage spikes will damage the diode.

If you require a stable power output laser that wont fail due to overheating by being on too long or a damaged diode due to current spikes you really must invest in a laser module with has adequate cooling and current control.

Laser projectors typically include three colours of laser diode modules , red green and blue , and the laser beams produced are merged and controlled by software to create any colour laser beams. The resulting coloured laser beam is then manipulated by small mirrors called galvos , the galvos are controlled by software and the result can be coloured text , beams and animations.
